We're proud to introduce our 5-week Performing Arts Residency Program, designed to empower 13 Artists/Companies in developing inspiring new work centered around social justice. Through our unique residency opportunities, we provide a collaborative space, resources, and support for artists to explore and flourish, driving change through the power of artistic expression.

Welcome to Fish Island Circus, where we're thrilled to announce our 5-Week Performing Arts Residency Program! We're passionate about supporting contemporary circus and performing arts and want to provide a platform for 13 artists and companies to develop incredible new work. With our program, you'll have the chance to take part in 1-week residencies for Research & Development or Creation of Performing Art, 1-day mini residencies for local artists, and 6-month mentorships with 10 free sessions in our top-of-the-line space. We're committed to fostering creativity and sparking conversations around social justice, and can't wait to showcase the groundbreaking performances that emerge from this residency in a 2-day event. About Fish Island Circus
Fish Island Circus is a unique warehouse located in Hackney Wick, offering a hybrid living and training space for circus artists and performers. With 9 artists living in rooms around a spacious training area, the warehouse also offers its facilities for hire, hosting scratch nights and rehearsals for professionals and enthusiasts alike.
The Application
Who can apply?
Fish Island Circus warmly invites applications from all circus artists, performers, and creatives regardless of their background and experience, with a special preference given to those who have not previously received funding, ensuring equal opportunities and access to resources for everyone.
Program Focus
We want to emphasizes social justice and environmental consciousness throughout the selection process and program itself.
Aspiring Artists/Companies are chosen based on their dedication to these values, ensuring that the 13 selected participants contribute meaningfully to the performing arts industry in the UK while addressing crucial social and ecological issues through their work.
How do I apply?
Applications for Fish Island Circus Residency opportunities will open in July, following the confirmation of our funding status from the Arts Council, ensuring a seamless process for all interested artists and performers.

Fish Island Circus is committed to accessibility and inclusivity, offering various application methods such as written forms, video submissions, or phone chats to accommodate each applicant's access needs and preferred communication style.
How is each residency structured?
3 x 1-week residencies dedicated to research and development or the creation of performing art pieces + a budget of 2500£
10 x 1-day mini residencies for local artists to explore and develop their craft + a budget of 250£
5 x 6-month mentorship programs, each including 10 free sessions at the venue
Upon completion of the residencies, Fish Island Circus will showcase the artists' new work during a 2-day public event. With a strong emphasis on social justice, the residency program strives to create a platform for meaningful conversations and change through the power of performing arts.
How will the decision be made?
A panel of industry professionals and Fish Island Circus residents collaboratively select residency recipients for the 5-week Performing Arts Residency Program, evaluating each candidate's commitment to social justice projects and their potential to contribute to the UK's performing arts scene, particularly within the realm of contemporary circus. This careful selection process ensures that the program empowers 13 Artists/Companies to develop innovative new work, addressing the need for greater support among circus artists in London.
